What This Document Is

The consolidated foundation of the model reconsolidation framework: the model, the mechanism, why change is difficult, the tested demonstrations, and the tethering – assembled from the definition-of-change scratch (v0.15) and the working record, as the context document for model reconsolidation conversations. The frame over all of it: build better models. Model reconsolidation is the mechanical process by which better models get built – in a life, in a session, in a conversation.

The Model

The brain is the model-building and model-using architecture. What it builds and runs is a single model – of reality – whose three basic elements are themselves sub-models: the self, the not-self (the environment, including others), and the relationship between the two. The model is part of how the brain operates, not something it has or uses: it is simultaneously a model of reality and the interpretation and prediction engine, used as truth and, in ordinary operation, never questioned. Alongside it runs the conscious representational working space: where imaginary future scenarios are conceptualised and consciously weighed, where thinking runs as self-contained scenario, where the conscious mind can accept, reject and decide.

Through the senses, people interact with the world. These experiences are contextualised scenarios, and they are stored in the brain as contextualised meanings with relative importance – memories of interactions, with their meanings and their relative importances. Each stored scenario is a complete and integrated mini-model of an event: the memory of the interaction, its meaning, and its relative importance are what it consists of – constituents of one object, not attributes attached to a record – as every level consists of some context constraining relevance, some meaning and some importance. The experiencing, the converting to meaning and importance, and the storing: together, the modelling function. The stored scenarios are the model’s substance; the complete model of reality is built of, and reducible to, these small elements. It is one process everywhere it runs: unconscious or conscious, abstract or concrete, instant or accumulated, tethered or untethered. A burnt finger updates the model instantly with no conscious involvement; a book, a conversation, a session enter the same way.

A person’s reality is the model operating. Different reality simply means different model – there is nothing else to change.

Belief, truth, fact, memory, experience, expectation, surprise – correctly defined, these are all versions of meaning: the same stored scenario, referenced and conceptualised differently, within the model. A belief is a meaning held as a pattern – rarely a single event, reinforced and recreated over time across many stored scenarios sharing one underlying meaning. One precise update can revise a whole pattern through matching; a powerful corrective experience arriving at the generalised level itself can impact the accumulated truth and collapse many of the specific examples beneath it; and some patterns require traversal, worked member by member. An expectation is a meaning running forward as prediction; a surprise is a meaning met by what it cannot accommodate. One substance throughout: everything the work touches is meaning, and meaning is revisable.

The model is not a set of discrete, bounded entries. Meshes overlap because meanings overlap – sometimes confirming, sometimes contradicting – one complete model of reality holding countless conflicting experiences of the same territory. Coherence is not stored as a verdict: the standing prediction is the importance-weighted resultant of the members, which is why one high-importance experience outweighs many mild ones. A fuzzy, statistical, importance-influenced mesh can confabulate – reconstruction completes patterns from subjective meanings and importances – which is the nature of models: symbols of the thing, not the thing. The conscious and the unconscious, the cognitive and the emotional, are not separate stores but positions on two axes of the one model: depth of embedding, and availability to analysis.

All of it reduces to physiology, biology, architecture. Memories are pathmeshes: complex meshes of connectivity, activated as wholes, never a single route. Models are pathmeshes. Thinking is pathmesh activation. Recall is not an address accessed but a pathmesh activated – which is why emotion can lead to a memory (the charge is the mesh already partially live), why an activated memory becomes revisable (activation is what opens the mesh to change), and why a vividly imagined scenario counts (imagining runs substantially the same meshes as living).

Model Reconsolidation – The Mechanism

The reconsolidation research and this framework describe the same mechanism and the same physiology under different framings. What destabilises and rewrites is the stored meaning-and-importance configuration – the model – not the record: in the flagship human studies, the fear response to the same cue is eliminated while declarative memory stays fully intact. The record persists; the model revises. The memory remains, clearly; the meaning, and hence the importance, changes. ‘Memory’ is a legacy term from the research lineage – a unit defined by laboratory procedure rather than by function – and prediction error as the gate makes immediate sense for a model (models exist to predict) and awkward sense for a record (records predict nothing). Appraisal theory carries the same correction from the psychological side: the appraisal, not the event, determines the response – same event, different meanings, different outcomes, some trauma, some pleasure.

The mechanism, in super simple terms, is two basic stages – activation and contradiction – and the rest is scaffolding.

Activation opens the mesh. The mesh is live whenever the present is being read through it: a recalled memory entered deliberately, or a live present scenario already running the prediction – either counts. Reactivation without mismatch changes nothing; a mesh merely discussed is not activated.

Direct contradiction updates it. The outcome negating the exact prediction being run, arriving inside the running prediction – same moment, same scenario – so it lands on the mesh rather than filing a parallel lesson beside it. Contradiction delivered as a separate event tends to create competing learning alongside the intact original (the extinction pattern: maintenance-dependent, relapse-prone); contradiction inside the running prediction revises the original (no return).

Importance is not a condition – it is an attribute. It lives on the prediction side: the importance of the lesson. Felt importance is emotional, neurochemical in nature – the currency deciding runs on. What importance does to change is set resistance: the more important the lesson, the harder the mesh is to change generally – the more resistant to general effects – while remaining changeable by precision: target it exactly, activate it, contradict it exactly. Change is a matching and contradiction process, and closeness of matching is the operative variable through both stages: whether the experience engages the exact mesh, and whether the contradiction negates its exact prediction. Partial matching gives partial update. Matching includes register: the contradiction must arrive in the register the mesh is held in – preverbal relational meshes answer to presence and touch, not to words.

The update revises the whole scenario, in place. The same scenario – not a parallel mesh beside it – changes in both predictive structure and importance. The charge belongs to the predicted outcome, so when the prediction revises, the charge goes with it: the scenario that carried a terrifying prediction now carries one that does not much matter, and the same scenario is more mundane. Re-running the same scenario and finding no charge verifies the update: the absent charge is the demotion, read directly. The emotional magnitude of the corrective moment governs how strongly the new configuration writes; for deliberately arranged corrective scenarios the two working variables are realisticness (bringing the mesh to full live activation) and emotional significance (writing the update at strength).

Two routes into change. Correction: what the model holds, revised – the operation above. Provision: what was never available, supplied from outside with its meaning attached, arriving as recognition, held by the provider until internalised – then embodied through scenario experience, which runs the correction machinery. One shape of the correction work is the completion of frozen scenarios: what was unsaid but needed to be said gets said, with full emotional reality, to the other as held in the model – and where reality can never provide the completion, because the other is gone from the world though not from the model, the virtual channel is the only place the scenario can close.

The scaffolding. Navigation (emotion followed as the importance trace – there is no importance without a scenario it belongs to; releasing emotion is discharging scenarios), regulation (keeping arousal where the mesh can open rather than flood – excessive arousal blocks the update window), strength engineering (the two variables worked deliberately), embodiment (identity-level integration through lived and imagined scenario experience), and verification (in the felt register: the charge re-test, felt truth – and in life: change that is spontaneous, maintenance-free, generalising, and tangible – the four markers of permanent transformational change).

Why Change Is Difficult

Early powerful experiences are quickly promoted to the unconscious – important, and not to be analysed. The most important memories are therefore by default powerful and unconscious, and that is the unconscious model running everything. The meshes running a person’s struggles are structurally invisible from inside: important enough to resist anything less than full activation, unconscious enough that introspection cannot find them, and running as truth, so in ordinary operation they never enter questioning. That is the structure of resistance to change, and why struggles are so difficult to understand from within. The work is always: find, surface, see, contradict – and finding is the hard part.

Pathmeshes activate all the time. What presents as globalised anxiety is the anxiety of predictions running live: generalised meshes running as standing predictions – going outside is dangerous, talking to people is dangerous, being misinterpreted is painful, being shamed is painful – low-level, unconscious, continuous. The anxiety is not stored residue; it is the felt charge of live prediction. What is accumulated is the truth beneath it: a foundational belief about the self (misunderstood, stupid, clumsy, ashamed, unloved) or the world (dangerous, hostile, unpredictable, cold), built from many specific experiences into a generalised meaning that runs as the standing frame. Regulation without scenario-finding calms the state and updates nothing – and though the generalised charge can seem to offer no target, a single memory is enough to open the channel to correction, because any member of the accumulated truth leads into the pattern.

The unconscious is reached by activation, and the channels are known: the emotion followed as the importance trace; the live present scenario already running the prediction, including the transference relationship, where the relational mesh fires at the person in the room and can be met there; metaphor and archetype – conscious associational mesh activation, a symbolic scenario whose structure overlaps the mesh, activating it by association; and, because imagining runs substantially the same meshes as living, the corrective scenario itself can be imaginary and virtual – the surfaced mesh met and contradicted in a constructed scene, entered with realisticness, felt with emotional significance, performing for the unconscious what a real corrective event would perform, deliberately rather than by luck.

The Demonstrations

The framework tested against lived cases, each one carrying a distinct facet of the mechanism.

The hug – live-present activation and top-down collapse. Paul, on a practitioner course, triggered the day before, confronting a fellow helper – expressing needs to a woman, the lifetime mesh running at full charge, prediction of attack live and firing. Mid-sentence, she stepped forward, held him, and comforted him with the sounds made for a baby. The contradiction arrived inside the running prediction, in the exact relational register, at maximum emotional magnitude – and the rewiring was felt as it happened, in real time. The mesh was never recalled; it was live in present operation. And the update ran top-down: not one memory revised but the accumulated truth struck at its generalised level – the model of self-in-pain and the model of women – with the members collapsing beneath it. A lifetime pattern, one moment, no maintenance since.

EFT – both update conditions in a self-administered loop, and the constituent boundary. Tuning in and voicing the reminder phrase is sustained activation; tapping keeps the person present and progressively downregulated while the mesh runs, so the lived experience is the feared content fully present without the predicted overwhelm – a direct contradiction of the affective forecast, in the register the forecast fires in, with SUDS re-rating as the built-in charge re-test. The setup statement quietly delivers a second, frame-level contradiction: the problem held live while self-acceptance is asserted. One-shot phobia cures are the operation meeting its easiest target – a discrete mesh whose meaning is almost entirely its affective forecast, so the contradiction covers the whole prediction and the mesh updates completely, verified in vivo. Frontline COVID stress work was the other function: pure regulation – state calmed, meshes intact, valuable and maintenance-based – the regulation-versus-update distinction in the field. And Karl Dawson’s practice observation, “EFT can release energy, but it doesn’t change the belief”, is the constituent structure seen from the session chair: the contradiction matches the affective forecast, so the importance constituent revises while the meaning constituent – the belief written in the scenario – can remain standing. Constituents revise independently: the same structure the laboratory dissociation shows.

The wordless sessions – the resonant instrument. Countless times, sitting with a client, no words needed. The mechanics: resonance is double-acting – accurate reception deepens the activation (a state being received can fire fully) and simultaneously is the contradiction (the mesh predicts that this state, expressed, brings abandonment, attack, rejection – and it is being expressed, fully, into a system that stays). One channel carries both conditions at once, synchronously, so the contradiction cannot arrive late. Co-regulation holds the window – the native dyadic mode in which regulation was first learned. Clients afterwards mostly cannot articulate it, and report in felt qualities: I felt held, I felt safe, I felt seen, I felt validated in my intensity, my too-muchness, my differentness – each phrase naming a prediction that failed to come true, the updated meshes testifying. The inarticulacy is the register: these meshes were written before words and updated without them. Nothing was explained; no concepts were provided; for these meshes the prediction was wrong, not the concept absent. And this is what A General Theory of Love saw: there needs to be love for true change – because for the deepest mesh class, whose prediction is always some form of conditional reception, the only content that contradicts is unconditionality, delivered as experience, in-state. Love is resonance; resonance is feeling felt, being experienced, and unconditionally loved and accepted in the process. Limbic resonance, regulation and revision is the relational-level description; model reconsolidation is the mechanism it runs on.

Lomi lomi – somatic model reconsolidation. The nervous system has two touch channels: discriminative touch (pressure, location, texture – the mechanics channel) and affective touch – C-tactile afferents tuned to slow gentle stroking, projecting to the insula: the channel infant holding runs on, registering touch as relational meaning. Western therapeutic massage is a discipline of the first channel; lomi lomi is a discipline of the second – loving the person through touch, holding them in unconditional love for an hour. Touch meshes activate on contact, automatically, in the register they were written in, and the loving touch is the counter-message delivered continuously inside the running prediction, with co-regulation built into the same strokes. The receivers split along the two routes: those who have not felt that touch since they were small babies are correction – the accumulated truth contradicted; those who never felt it are provision – what being held in unconditional love is, supplied as felt experience for the first time. Powerfully healing because dual-route by nature. And in the affective channel the practitioner’s state is the content – which is why the work cannot be transmitted by someone not operating in love.

Grief – frozen-scenario completion. Grief as the accumulation of unexpressed emotional communication over time, within a relationship: scenarios frozen mid-interaction, the charge waiting in scenarios that stay open and do not demote. The corrective scenario is the completion itself – the unsaid said, with full emotional reality, to the other as held in the model. The case: a man whose brother died without a goodbye – one session, the goodbye said where the relationship actually lives, and his friends did not recognise him afterwards, personality-wise. The generalising and tangible markers, read by third parties, unprompted.

Generalised anxiety – the live-prediction case. A diagnosis whose own core criterion – apprehensive expectation – names prediction, commonly managed by medication and regulation, relapsing on discontinuation: state calmed, meshes intact. The framework’s reading makes it workable: the charge attaches to everything and nothing because the meshes are generalised – and a single memory opens the channel, because any member of the accumulated truth leads into the pattern.

The mirror – accurate reflection as corrective experience. Being accurately mirrored is itself a validating experience – information is like having your pain explained to you, no change; feeling felt moves the mesh. An accurate mirror can be cathartic for a person who has carried the unmet need their whole life – and structural articulation, landing as recognition rather than information, can touch the mesh directly.

Paul’s own case – both routes, in sequence. A lifetime of undiagnosed twice-exceptionality: unacceptable in the not-enough-ness (autistic differences read as deficiency within the neurotypical context) and the too-much-ness (ADHD intensity; giftedness that unnerved and intimidated adults, who said so) – too much and not enough at the same time, so no acceptable amount of the self existed anywhere on the dial. The correction required the provision route first: the missing concept – the 2e neurotype – supplied with its meaning, re-contextualising the accumulated history at once, cognitively immediate. The identity then changed the way identity changes: through the meshes, worked and lived, as felt truth. Removing the invalidation, the shame, the fear from the accumulated pair is model reconsolidation, applied at home.

The Tethering – Summary

The reconsolidation lineage (reactivation plus prediction error opening a labile window; restabilisation writing what is present; boundary conditions – stronger, older memories need fuller activation; no renewal or reinstatement after window-timed update, unlike extinction). The human dissociations: fear response eliminated, declarative memory intact. Engram ensembles and pattern completion (content-addressable recall; distributed meshes). Amygdala modulation of consolidation (emotional significance gating write strength). Imagery-perception overlap (imagined scenarios engaging substantially the same machinery). Damasio’s somatic markers and the neural valuation currency (felt importance as the decision requirement). Appraisal theory (the appraisal, not the event, determining the response; single incidents producing global self and world beliefs). Meaning-overlap reconstruction (false-memory findings as the behaviour of a fuzzy, generalising, importance-weighted system working normally). Complementary learning systems (episodes stored fast, generalised structure extracted – with generalised levels becoming autonomous once formed). Systems consolidation and implicit memory (depth of embedding; availability to analysis as an access property). Affective-touch neurophysiology (the two touch channels). Bio-behavioural synchrony and co-regulation (the dyadic channel, from infancy onward). Grades held honestly throughout: the two stages and their conditions are direct science; navigation-as-method, the pattern levels, top-down collapse and the provision route are highly probable inference plus practitioner evidence; the resonant instrument rests on the limbic lineage and session evidence.

Build Better Models

The frame over the whole framework. Everything stored is a model; every level is the same object at different granularity; models are symbols of the thing, never the thing – complex, fuzzy, statistical, importance-influenced, tethered in degree, and improvable, which is their nature and their purpose. Improving models is the best use of the brain. Using what you have intelligently (model awareness) is the next best thing. The stance: forward-looking always – models improved, never merely corrected; builders praised for carrying the model to where it stands; apparent contradictions in a model read kindly, as open questions – the signals of a missing concept, and the invitation to build. Model reconsolidation is the mechanical process by which better models get built: activation, contradiction, revision – in a session, in a life, in a conversation. Kindness and curiosity, honesty, no judgement.
